Commandant's Legion of Valor Medal and Scholarship

James S. Garberg STMA ’ 41, former Army Captain, Distinguished Service Cross recipient, and past Legion of Valor national commander created the Commandant's Legion of Valor Medal and Scholarship in 1997, providing a tuition grant to a junior honor guard cadet for his senior year's tuition. The recipient is chosen by the Commandant of Cadets based on:

  • Demonstrated leadership performance and potential.
  • A respectable record representing the goals and philosophy of Saint Thomas Academy.
  • Character, integrity, and honor.
  • An expressed desire to continue service to America in the military.

The Commandant selects a recipient and first runner-up. The selectee will receive the Commandant's Legion of Valor Medal, and the tuition grant, after existing financial aid from other sources is awarded. Any remaining earnings balance will be awarded to the runner-up.
