At Saint Thomas Academy we know that boys are relational learners.

The Upper School's strong, balanced, college preparatory curriculum includes numerous AP and Honors courses; a choice of Chinese, French, or Spanish; and a variety of electives—from ceramics to computer programming.

Graduation Requirements

Students must successfully complete a minimum of the following academic courses, in ninth through the twelfth grade, for graduation.

English 4 years
Fine Arts 1/2 year (year long course)
Health 1/2 year (year long course)
Leadership 4 years (or each year at Saint Thomas Academy)
Mathematics* 3 years 
Physical Education 1 credit (2 years)
Science (Laboratory)* 3 years (Biology and Chemistry required)
Social Studies 3 1/2 years**
Theology 4 years (or each year at Saint Thomas Academy)
World Language* Completion of 3rd level of same language in high school

*Most selective college expect four years of math, science and world language if available in high school.
**Requirement of 3 1/2 years begins with the Class of 2021.

All required courses listed are organized on a semester basis for grading purposes.  Grades received at the end of the first and second semester are FINAL grades for each semester.

Please note: AP, CIS and PAAC courses have an additional fee associated with the exam.  CIS and PAAC courses allow students to earn college credit and receive a transcript directly from the University of Minnesota or St. Mary's University.

Other Graduation Requirements

  • Write and deliver a senior speech to the student body and school community at Formation.
  • One hundred (100) hours of community service moderated by the Saint Thomas Academy service-learning program.
  • As a college preparatory school, Saint Thomas Academy values post secondary education.  As such, all seniors are required to complete at least one (1) application to a four-year college.  While Saint Thomas Academy recognizes that some students may choose to take a gap year for service, work, travel or athletic opportunities, it is important for each student to plan, prepare and set goals for his short and long term future.  College Counseling is part of each cadets' experience and the college counseling staff will assist cadets in planning their individual post-secondary needs.
