Coaching Staff


Tom Vannelli 
Tom is in his 14th year as Co-Head Coach at Saint Thomas Academy. Prior to joining STA, he was Co-Head Coach at Cretin-Derham Hall for four years. Tom played high school hockey at St. Paul Academy from 1970-1973 and then attended the University of Minnesota where he played under the legendary Herb Brooks for four seasons. During that time, the Gophers captured two NCAA National Championships. He was also a member of the 1977 U.S. World National Team. Tom finished his hockey career after playing one year in Lugano, Switzerland. He and his wife Teri live in Mendota Heights and have three children – Patti, Mike, and Robbie. 

Greg Vannelli 

Greg is also in his 14th year as Co-Head Coach at Saint Thomas Academy. Prior to joining STA, Greg was Head Coach at St. Paul Academy for four years and assisted at Cretin-Derham Hall for two years. Greg played high school hockey at STA from 1968- 1972 and then attended the University of St. Thomas where he played four seasons. Greg is a member of the University of St. Thomas Athletic Hall of Fame for hockey and holds the record for total career points by a defenseman. He and his wife Sue live in the St. Paul Highland Park neighborhood and have four children – Anna, Joe, Kristen, and Katie. 

Mike Vannelli 

Mike is returning for his sixth year as an assistant coach with the STA hockey program. He will apply his knowledge and experience working primarily with the defenseman. Before joining STA, he coached in the High School Elite League. Mike played for Cretin-Derham Hall from 1999-02 where he was named All-Conference three years and All-State his senior year. Mike joined the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede for the 2003 season and then attended and played for the University of Minnesota (2004-07). He was team captain his senior year and named All-American by USCHO. While at the U of M, Mike was part of two WCHA Championship teams and played in the NCAA Frozen Four in 2005. Mike finished his hockey career playing professionally in Germany and Norway. Mike is Tom’s son and lives in St. Paul with his wife Fallon and their children, Blake and Raylin. Mike is a VP of Sales for Belwether, a commercial real estate debt and equity brokerage firm.

Joe Vannelli 

Joe will be returning to the STA hockey staff as an assistant. Previously, Joe was an assistant for the Highland Bantams and the High School Elite League. He will continue working with the forwards at the varsity and junior varsity levels. Joe played high school hockey at Cretin-Derham Hall from 1997-2000 where he was All-Conference three years. Joe attended the University of St. Thomas where he played from 2000-03. He works in the medical industry as a sales manager for Gemini, a distributor of Arthrex orthopedic products. Joe is Greg’s son and lives in St. Paul. 

Rob Vannelli 

Rob is a graduate (’13) and a three year varsity hockey letter winner at the University
of St. Thomas.  He is in his third year with the program, and he will be working with our defenseman. He is also a graduate of STA (’08) where he played varsity hockey and baseball for three years. Rob was named an All-State defenseman his senior year and contributed to two Cadet state titles (’06, ’08). Rob is also Tom’s son and works as a sales rep with Gemini Medical Sales. 

Greg Monahan 

Mono is entering his ninth season with the STA coaching staff. He will again be working with the goalies this season. From 1978-81, Mono played hockey at STA, capping his high school experience by attaining All-Conference honors in both 1980 and 1981 and serving as the team’s captain in 1981. Mono began his coaching career in 1986 as the Men’s JV coach at the University of St. Thomas. In the 29 years since, he has coached at every level from squirts to college. The Monahan’s are no strangers to STA hockey with family players having included his brother Mike (’78), father Denny (’53 and STA Athletic Hall of Fame), and uncles George (’51) and Jack (’49). 

Mark McKasy

Mark returns for his second season with the program. He is a graduate of STA (’86) where he earned four varsity letters in hockey and was a member of the 1985 team that won the St. Paul City Conference and Twin City Championship. Mark earned All-Conference Honorable Mention during his junior and senior years and was a team captain his senior year. Mark graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 1990 with a BA in Marketing and an MBA in Finance 2000. While at UST he played varsity hockey for three years, was a member of two MIAC Championship teams, and participated in two NCAA National Tournaments. Prior to joining the STA staff , he served as a volunteer coach at both the youth and collegiate levels. Mark’s grandfather (’20) and father (’60) are both graduates of the Academy. Mark resides in Mendota Heights and is the owner of the McKasy Insurance Agency. 

Aaron Hoiland

Aaron is also returning to our coaching staff for his second year as the head JV coach and varsity assistant. He is in his fifth year teaching English at STA. Aaron has 20 years of high school and college hockey coaching experience which includes head coach of Forest Lake and St. Peter/LeSueur varsity teams and six years with Gustavus Adolphus in the MIAC as an assistant. He lettered in hockey two years and graduated from University of St. Thomas in 1996. Aaron is married to Nicole and has three children – Zoe, Sebastian, and Ani. 

Andrew Commers

Andrew is a new addition to our coaching staff . He will primarily be working with the JV program. He is a graduate of St. John’s University (‘15) where he was a three-year letter winner and captain his senior year. Andrew is also a product of the STA program where he played 4 years (2009-2012), winning State Championships in 2011, 2012. He is currently working in commercial real estate for Cushman & Wakefield/NorthMarq.
