Baseball Bat information from MSHSL

According to the MSHSL, "as of January 1, 2012, the only bats that are allowed to be used in high school baseball are wood bats (100%), or bats which meet the new BBCOR specifications." STA will follow the league's "strong advice" and implement this policy for all baseball teams grades 9-12. More information, including the bats which meet the BBCOR specifications, is available on this document from the MSHSL [pdf].

Captains' Practices

Captains' practices start January 9, 2012 in the bubble, Mondays and Wednesdays 6:00-8:00 p.m. Practices end the Friday prior to Spring Break (March 12-16). Captains' practices during spring break are TBA. These practices are run by the seniors; attendance is not taken and participation is 100% optional. Spring Break is one week prior to the official start of baseball (March 19) so there are no conflicts. Coach Weinberg's recommends that if you’re traveling over break, try to play a little catch and maybe swing a bat.

New Format for STA VFW Baseball

Parents, Players and Associations:

A new direction is planned for the Saint Thomas Academy VFW baseball team, beginning in 2011.

The plan is to have two VFW teams made up of a Tier 1 and a Tier 2 team.

In the past, we have typically had 18-20 sophomores available to play VFW.  By adding another team, all of our sophomores will have the opportunity to play VFW baseball in 2011.  We then want to fill the remaining VFW spots with our more advanced freshman players.

Our plan is to confirm these teams when we select our sophomore and freshman teams in late March / early April.  We also hope that by implementing this new process we can minimize any potential disruption to your programs.

I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this might cause to the players, parents and associations but felt it was important to inform you as early as possible of this new process.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly.

Paul Weinberg
Saint Thomas Academy Head Baseball Coach
