Highlights from the 2011-12 school year
The Chess team was second in the fall conference with a record of 9-1. Three seniors had perfect seasons, M. Dahl (10-0), P. Amarasinghe (9-0) and D. Sosa (9-0). At the November individual conference tournament R. Schelitzche ’13 came in sixth place in the gold division and A. Kajunju ’13 came in fourth place in the silver division (Dahl and Amarasinghe did not compete).
M. Dahl '12 placed first in the 12th grade section of the 2011 National K-12 Grade Level tournament in Texas (Nov. 18-20). As the winner of the division, he was offered a "full ride" scholarship to the University of Texas-Dallas. Dahl is currently rated at 2218, a National Master (this is the third highest level created by the US Chess Federation).
P. Amarasinghe '12 ended in a two-way tie for the first place at National Youth Action Championship (West), December 9-11, 2011, at Irvine, CA. The two winners were made the Co-Champions, 2011 National Youth Action Championship (West).
The Debate team has been building its strongest record in over a decade, experiencing success at the varsity, JV and novice levels. The team has earned major awards in every tournament they have entered and have taken first place on more than one occasion. Veterans K. Anderson ’13, E. Polsky ’13 and S. Doherty-Powell ’14 have led the varsity team this year, and Anderson and Polsky are among the leaders for the MDTA Cup, given by the Minnesota Debate Teachers’ Association to the top debater in the state over the course of the season. The team as a whole is a close second behind Apple Valley in the race for the team MDTA Cup. Newcomers L. Nields ’14, C. Plunkett ’14, and N. Weir ’17 have also earned high finishes and speaker awards in the JV and novice (first-year) divisions. The team is looking forward to qualifying several debaters to the state and national tournaments during second semester.
E. Polsky, '13 qualified for the National Forensic League National Tournament in Lincoln-Douglas Debate this past Saturday in the Central Minnesota District qualifying tournament held at St. Paul Academy. Polsky is the first STA debater to qualify for this tournament in five years, and the first Lincoln-Douglas debater in 17 years. The tournament will be held in Indianapolis June, 2012.
K. Anderson '13 was the Section 4AA Debate Champion. He qualified for his third consecutive trip to the state debate tournament (placed 19th). E. Polsky '13 qualified for his first trip to the state tournament (placed 13th).
The Math Team placed fifth in the division. Individually in the division, K. Riehm '13 was ninth overall and G. Dufek '15 tied for 14th.
The Mock Trial team had a great season, making it to the Regional Semifinals, before losing to Eagan. At the December 9, 2011, scrimmage, M. Goldammer '12 and P. Hegdahl '13 won "best lawyer" awards. At the February 2, 2012, competition, Hegdahl received a perfect 10 out of 10 score.
