To STA Parents, Alumni and Greater Community,
Over this past weekend, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) released the section realignments for all sports. This information, published in newspapers and placed on the MSHSL website, indicated that Saint Thomas Academy would play in Class 4A for the 2017 and 2018 football seasons. This information was incorrect and led many to question why STA would play in a smaller class.
In this case, there is a process for schools who don’t meet the threshold of 5A classification to opt up to be placed in 5A football. This is a similar process to what we do in hockey, opting up to play in the AA class. We did not inform the MSHSL properly that we wished to remain in 5A, so they simply placed in us in Class 4A, which is where our enrollment dictates we play. That oversight is my responsibility and it has been rectified.
This morning, I talked with Chris Franson of the MSHSL and he assured me that on April 6, 2017, the necessary steps will be taken to place us in Class 5A for football, where we always assumed we would be placed. We will remain in Section 3, the same section we have been in for several years. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused within our community.
