MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn., Sept. 18, 2017 – Saint Thomas Academy has named Deborah Edwards to the position of director of strategic marketing and communications, a position in which she will be responsible for stewarding and building greater affinity for the Academy’s revered brand, and the legacy of academic and athletic excellence behind it to support admissions and advancement objectives.

“Deborah brings to the Academy a unique combination of brand management, donor relations and marketing expertise, and a passion for developing young people with high moral character, which I’m confident will serve the Academy well as we further elevate our position as the only all-male, college prep, Catholic, leadership/military institution in Minnesota,” said Headmaster Matthew C. Mohs ’90. “Her deep experience in athletic marketing will also help us leverage our athletic programs for greater benefit for the Academy, in general.”

Prior to joining Saint Thomas Academy, Edwards fostered positive experiences and personal growth among coaches, parents and high school athletes through the national nonprofit Positive Coaching Alliance. Since 2013, she served as director of field operations, guiding five U.S. chapters toward their mission and financial goals. She was promoted to the position after leading one of the organization’s most successful chapter start-ups as executive director of the Minnesota chapter, a position she held from 2013-2016.

Edwards served University of Minnesota Collegiate Athletics in a variety of operational and marketing functions from 2000-2013. As director of basketball office in 2012-2013, she led the U of M’s largest-funded women’s sport with business acumen, partnering skills and creativity, and supported advancement by engaging donors through the annual fund, major gifts and campaign giving. Prior to her promotion to director of basketball office, Edwards created and executed strategic offline and digital marketing plans across the school’s athletic programs, with particular focus on Gopher Football, as senior associate director of marketing, associate director of marketing, assistant director of marketing, senior marketing coordinator and marketing coordinator.

She is a board member of the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota and a member of the Twin Cities Dunkers. She received the University of Minnesota Athletics Golden Goldy Award for Teammate of the Year in 2011 and was also named University of Minnesota Athletics Teammate of the Month in August 2010. She was a Big Ten Super Fan Award winner in 2008, and was among the university’s marketing staff when it was named Big Ten Marketing Staff of the Year in 2002-03, 2007-08 and 2011-12. She is a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and an advocate for Girl Scouts of America.

She has a bachelor’s degree in communications studies with a minor in sports management from the University of Iowa and a communications certificate from the University of Minnesota.
