Saint Thomas Academy Seniors Place High in State and National Economic Competitions

Riehm ties for first individually at national Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn., April 3, 2017 – Saint Thomas Academy seniors are competing in several regional, state and national economics competitions this spring. In each of the already-completed competitions, the teams and individuals have performed exceptionally well.

Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge

Individually, Dan Riehm tied for first nationally in the Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge, an invitation-only competition held at Harvard University on Saturday, April 1. The Saint Thomas Academy team (pictured L-R) of Sam Edgerton, Jack Gephart, Jake Marvin, Marko Jurkovich, Joe Boyle, Riehm, Nick Apitz, and (seated) Jackson Meija tied for third nationally. The Harvard competition gave Academy students a chance to compete against several east coast teams as well as visit the historic Harvard Yard.

In the state championship of the Minnesota Economics Challenge held on Wednesday, March 29, at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, two Saint Thomas teams competed. Placing third was the AP economics team of: Marvin, Riehm, Meija and Apitz.

The team of Austin Grove, Plai Vue, Willie Reim, and Nick Skweres placed fifth. The competition is an initiative of the Minnesota Council on Economics Education.
