Saint Thomas Academy Board of Trustees Approves Addition of 6th Grade to Middle School in 2017-18 Academic Year

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn., Oct. 18, 2016 The Saint Thomas Academy Board of Trustees recently approved adding 6th grade to the Saint Thomas Academy Middle School, beginning in the 2017-2018 academic year. The change brings the Academy into better alignment with the 6-8 middle school model prevalent in the educational landscape today, according to Headmaster Matthew C. Mohs ’90.

“Most Twin Cities area school districts have shifted to K-5 and 6-8 models over the last decade,” Mohs said. “Our 7-8 model results in boys having a ‘gap’ year and having to attend three different schools in three consecutive years. By adding 6th grade, families can directly enroll their boys at the conclusion of 5th grade.”

While the middle school is a “school-within-a-school,” it has its own separate identity, including its own building, team of teachers, formations, Advisory Houses and uniforms. When the middle school expands, the school-within-a-school model will be enhanced through increased enrollment, allowing for expanded leadership and co-curricular activities. The middle school’s current facilities and staff will accommodate the additional grade level without expansion – both will be almost exclusively dedicated to the needs of middle school students.

“We believe adding a 6th grade will enhance the quality of our middle school and give our students an even better preparation for their upper school education,” Mohs said. “Investing in a Saint Thomas Academy education allows boys to enter high school well-prepared to be outstanding students, and graduate with the skills to be successful university students and citizens.”

The middle school will offer a complete core education (English, mathematics, science, social studies, theology and world language) plus fine arts, electives, athletics and activities. Recently hired middle school teachers have both sixth grade teaching experience as well as experience designing and writing sixth grade curricula. The Academy has a 1:1 iPad program that does not come with an added technology fee.

Saint Thomas Academy’s sister school, Visitation School, will concurrently change its middle school to an all-girls format, emphasizing single-gender programming/education.
