NewDay USA Foundation to present scholarship Thursday at 10 a.m.

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn., Nov. 9, 2016
– On the eve of Veterans Day, Saint Thomas Academy 8th grader E. Johnson will officially receive a $10,000-per-year, 5-year scholarship to Saint Thomas Academy from NewDay USA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of NewDay USA, a leading VA mortgage lender. Gary Morrison, vice president of NewDay USA Foundation, will present the scholarship to Johnson during formation on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m.

Since 2013, NewDay USA has been awarding scholarships to military school cadets nationwide who are the sons and daughters of service members who have been killed or severely wounded due to their service to the country. The scholarships are symbolic of the sacrifice shared by the service members and their families. To date, NewDay USA has committed over $1 million to this cause.

Johnson is in his first year at Saint Thomas Academy. He chose to attend the Academy for its learning and leadership opportunities, and the strong sense of brotherhood that prevails at the all-boys, Catholic, military/leadership school.

Johnson’s father served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of corporal when discharged in 1992. While deployed in Operation Desert Storm, he sustained a traumatic brain injury that left him 100 percent disabled and unable to work for the rest of his life.

The scholarship is truly a blessing for the family, according to Johnson’s father. He said, “This is a gift for my son for what he goes through dealing with me being 100 percent disabled. For Eric to have the opportunity to go to a great school like Saint Thomas Academy, it’s such a gift – it’s so overwhelming. He’s very happy.”
