The North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America invited Jacob Weinstein '18 to be a co-presenter with Daniel Stein at their Spring Meeting on April 22, 2017.
Weinstein, who takes advanced mathematical classes at the University of Minnesota, worked on "Newton-Okounkov Bodies of Bott-Samelson Varieties."
"A central theme in algebraic geometry is to associate combinatorial objects to geometric objects (algebraic varieties). This allows researchers to answer geometric questions by transforming their problem into a combinatorial problem, and vice versa. One such bridge between algebraic geometry and combinatorics is the study of Newton-Okounkov bodies.
