CHINESE

Introduction to Chinese
This course is an introduction of the Chinese language and culture. The student becomes aware of the proper pinyin pronunciation, character stroke order, tones and the rhythm of Mandarin.  Substantively, the student’s study focuses on simple vocabulary that acts as a foundation for future Chinese study.
Prerequisite: Entrance exam score; instructor's approval
Grade Level: 7

Middle School Chinese I
The study of topics involving, time; family and friends; the home and neighborhood; classroom commands; and items found in everyday life are the core of this year’s curriculum. Through the use of the basic text, role-plays, and hard work the student learns to express himself in the present tense. He is also introduced to the diversity of the Chinese language and culture via media and real life experience.
Prerequisite: instructor's approval
Grade Level: 8

Chinese I
Students learn to understand, speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese.  By the end of the year, students will be able to hold brief conversations about their families, friends and daily life activities.  Students will also become familiar with Chinese culture and history.  This course is intended for students who have had little or no previous exposure to the Chinese language.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

Chinese II
In Chinese II, students will continue to learn phonetic sounds and phonemic awareness through the use of literature and skill-building activities. Students will expand their vocabulary and understanding of Chinese syntax and participate in activities designed to refine skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. In Chinese II, students will strengthen their understanding of Chinese culture through authentic Chinese songs, on-line reading materials and projects.
Grade Levels: 10 - 12

Chinese III
This course continues the aims of Chinese I and II in emphasizing vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and conversation.  Reading, writing, and speaking skills are intensified.  Cultural studies include Chinese art, music, and holiday celebrations.  Chinese poems are introduced.
Prerequisite: Chinese II or Departmental approval
Grade Levels: 10 - 12

Chinese IV
The focus of Chinese IV is on integrating the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students will use a rich vocabulary, accurate and more advanced grammar structures, and appropriate cultural understanding to demonstrate proficiency in all manners of communication.  In this course, students will read from China’s rich collection of folk stories and write compositions on a variety of topics.  They will role play, discuss current events in China, and use multi-media to further develop more complex listening comprehension and speaking skills.
Prerequisite: Chinese III or Departmental approval
Grade Levels: 10 - 12

Honors Chinese IV
This course is considered a Pre-Advanced Placement Language course. In addition to the standard Chinese IV course work, emphasis of this class is Chinese for literature and conversation. The students will read works of Chinese authors, and continue to strengthen their skills in oral presentation and discussion on various topics. Composition and literature assignments will provide the opportunity to review sentence structure and grammar, and strengthen the student’s Chinese writing skills.
Prerequisite: Chinese III and Departmental approval

FRENCH

Introduction to French
This course is an introduction of the French language and culture. The student becomes aware of the French sound system and rhythm and intonation of the language. Functional studies focus on simple vocabulary that acts as a base for future French study.
Prerequisite: Entrance exam score; instructor's approval

The study of topics involving weather, time, and seasons; family and friends; the home and neighborhood; and items found in everyday life are the core of this year’s curriculum. Through the use of the basic text and oral comprehension program, the student learns to express himself in the present tense. He also is introduced to the diversity of the French language and culture through carefully planned units that present the French-speaking countries around the world.
Prerequisite: Instructor's approval

 French I
The study of topics involving weather, time, and seasons; family and friends; the home and neighborhood; and items found in everyday life are the core of this year's curriculum.  Through the use of the basic text and oral comprehension program, the student learns to express himself in the present tense and is introduced to the use and practice of progressive future and recent past tense.  He also is introduced to the diversity of the French language and culture through units that present the French-speaking countries around the world.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

French II
The study of topics involving food and eating and nature and the environment are the core of this year's curriculum.  Through the use of the basic text and oral comprehension program, the student grows to better express himself in the present, progressive future, recent past, and compound past tenses.  A five-part cultural study of France allows the student to compare and contrast this culture with the American culture.

French III
The study of topics involving leisure time activities; matters of health and well-being; traveling and everyday problems are the core of this year's curriculum.  The student continues to work towards a mastery of all previous tenses studied as well as a beginning knowledge of the reflexive construction and the imperfect, future, conditional and subjunctive tenses.  Writing and speaking portfolios are made to help mark progress.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

Honors French III
The study of topics involving leisure time activities; matters of health and well-being; traveling and everyday problems are the core of this year's curriculum.  The student continues to work towards mastery of all previous tenses studied as well as a beginning knowledge of the reflexive construction and the imperfect, future, conditional and subjunctive tenses.  Writing and speaking portfolios are made to help mark progress.  This is done at a more challenging and demanding level than regular French III.  Students who choose to enroll in the honors program must be prepared for considerable outside work and a more demanding classroom atmosphere.

French IV
The student continues to develop his skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension through a variety of activities that have been chosen to complement the student's level of proficiency and interest.  Short stories, movies, plays, and writings help reinforce the studied material.

CIS French
This course is the first part of the University of Minnesota’s Intermediate sequence of French study, FREN1003.  Through this program students can receive 5 college course credits.  Students in College in the Schools (CIS) will develop listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in the context of cultural themes related to the Francophone world.  Students will review basic grammar and increase their understanding and use of all core grammatical structures.   CIS students must purchase their own books and register at the University of Minnesota.
Grade Levels: 11, 12

French V
The student continues to develop his skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension through a variety of activities that have been chosen to complement the student's level of proficiency and interest.  Short stories, movies, plays, and writings help reinforce the studied material.

Honors French V
This course is a continuation of Honors French IV and takes into consideration student interests and needs. During the first semester of this course, students study the history of France from its formation to the middle ages. Students also read works by Victor Hugo and Ronsard. During the second semester, students continue their study of France’s history and read works by Albert Camus and Eugene Ionesco.

LATIN

Latin I
Students comprehend the Latin language through the study of vocabulary, syntax and practice in reading Latin. It is the intent of this course to give the student a facility in reading Latin, an appreciation of Roman history and Roman culture, and a better appreciation of the contribution Latin has made to English. The Latin readings introduce students to mythology and the everyday political and social history of Rome.
Prerequisite: 2.5 GPA and space availability; instructor's approval
Grade Level: 8

 Latin I
Students comprehend the Latin language through practice in reading Latin, with special emphasis on the legacies of Latin in our own language.  They are also introduced to the diverse social and political history of the Romans.  Students will discover the wonders of Roman mythology, art, and culture.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

Latin II
As a continuation of the Latin sequence, students appreciate the intricacies of the Lingua Latina through practice in reading and composition. The readings focus on the culture and history of Ancient Greece and Rome. During the first semester, students begin to read the Metamorphoses of Ovid in translation.  Through this work and a series of lectures the students are given a thorough introduction to classical mythology.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

Latin III
Students undergo a thorough review of classical syntax, grammar, and morphology.  Although the main focus is the language of Cicero & Caesar, students read selections from all periods of the Lingua Latina from Plautus to Petrarch.

Honors Latin III
Students continue to build their Latin skills through focused practice in reading and composition. Major grammatical topics are reviewed. Along with a continuation of Roman social, political, and military history, the course begins a focus on literary history and the gradual development of the language through the centuries. To this end, students will study the prose of Caesar, the correspondence of Pliny, and the orations of Cicero. Honors students continue their study of classical mythology and its use within the classical milieu.  During the 1st semester students read the Iliad and Odyssey in translation.  During the 2nd semester, students read the Aeneid of Vergil in translation.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

SPANISH

Introduction to Spanish
This course introduces students to the alphabet, sound system, and intonation patterns in Spanish.  In addition to developing communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, students also gain an appreciation and understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Prerequisite: Entrance exam score; instructor's approval
Grade Level: 7

Middle School Spanish I
This course continues to introduce students to the Spanish language and culture.  This course allows students to continue their communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish in order to complete their Level 1 requirement.
Prerequisite: Instructor's approval
Grade Level: 8

Spanish I
This course introduces the skills of communication (listening, speaking, reading, writing) in Spanish. It also attempts to instill in students an understanding and appreciation of persons belonging to social, cultural, and ethnic groups different from their own. The acquisition of good study skills is also stressed at this level.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

Spanish II
This course offers the opportunity to continue developing and deepening the skills of communication (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in Spanish, to investigate and experience the richness of cultures, and to continue forming those study skills which help students become lifelong learners. There is an increased emphasis on grammatical skills at this level.
Grade Levels: 9 - 12

Spanish III
This course enables students to further enrich their awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures and to continue developing their skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.  There is an increased emphasis on language production skills at this level.

Honors Spanish III
In the Honors Spanish III course, there is a minimal amount of review of previously presented material.  More challenging readings, including novels, are introduced.  A higher level of proficiency is expected at this level.

Spanish IV
This course is designed for students wishing to increase their written and oral proficiency in the language as well as gain cultural insight. Native literature is studied.

Honors Spanish IV
This is a course for those students who wish to continue their mastery of the Spanish language. Grammar is reviewed; however, the majority of the class time is spent building listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills while developing an awareness of Hispanic culture.  Students are expected to demonstrate their own proficiency, via impromptu and prepared presentations. Native literature is studied.  If the Honors Spanish IV and Spanish V classes are offered jointly, there will be additional work for the students enrolled in the Honors Spanish IV course.

Spanish V

Honors Spanish V
This is a course for those students who wish to continue to master the Spanish language.  Native literature as well as Hispanic history and culture are emphasized.  The continuing development of oral proficiency via topical discussions and classroom conversation also are central to the course.  This course provides preparation for post-secondary study.
