2010-11 Financial Assistance Information
Saint Thomas Academy's Board of Trustees and administrators are committed to ensuring that a quality education is accessible and affordable to all interested young men. Approximately 35% of current Saint Thomas Academy students receive financial assistance.
Students will receive more than $2,000,000 of financial assistance for the 2010-11 school year. The majority of assistance is provided by Saint Thomas Academy Endowment Funds and the Annual Giving program.
NEED-BASED GRANTS
Saint Thomas Academy provides a need-based financial assistance program. Consistent with the school's mission, this program promotes and provides access to its educational programs to families of academically qualified students who would be unable to avail themselves of a Catholic, military/leadership, all-male, college preparatory education without assistance.
All financial assistance applicants need to complete the Archdiocesan financial aid (TADS) application form, which requires family income, expense, and asset information - a link to the information is below. Applications are processed to determine the applicant's adjusted income. Adjusted income is current income less standard amounts allowed for living expenses, plus a percentage of assets. The adjusted income number indicates relative need and is the basis used for awarding grants. Gross income, family size, and amount of assets are the major factors influencing financial assistance.
Financial assistance grants averaged $7,500 per student for the 2009-10 school year. Saint Thomas Academy's process for calculating grants differs from other private schools in the Twin Cities. The Academy awards a higher number of grants to middle-class families ($80,000 to $100,000 income level) than any other school. This process allows for a truly socio-economic diverse student body.
MERIT-BASED GRANTS
Saint Thomas Academy also supplies merit-based grants to qualified students.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE ESTIMATES
A Financial Assistance Estimate Worksheet is available and allows you to confidentially estimate your own potential financial grant. Contact Robley Evans, Director of Business Affairs, at 651-683-1510 or revans@cadets.com if you have any questions.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The fastest way to process your application is to apply online by clicking the TADS link below. If you do not want to apply online, financial assistance forms are available from the Business Office in January. Forms are mailed to families currently on financial assistance. Forms for incoming students are available on the days of entrance exams. Financial assistance must be applied for each year. The financial assistance deadline was March 1, 2010 for the 2010-11 school year. Late applicants may still file for financial assistance through the TADS Web site.
The completed form, along with a copy of the applicant's tax return, is then sent to TADS - a $29 processing fee made payable to TADS must be included. All applications are processed and returned to school by the end of March. The Saint Thomas Academy financial assistance committee then determines individual financial grant amounts with information provided by TADS and its own internal grant table. In most cases, the STA grant table provides for more financial assistance than suggested by TADS. The financial grant amount is then communicated to each family by the middle of April. Those families who do not submit a Financial Assistance Application by March 1, 2010, but otherwise qualify for aid, may be placed on a waiting list depending on availability of funds.
"My vision is to provide sufficient tuition assistance to make it possible for any qualified boy who needs financial aid to attend Saint Thomas Academy."
