2011 Required Summer Reading

The benefits of reading for the development of intellectual and academic skills are well documented. However, the demands of the regular school year often make it difficult for students to find time to read as much as is desirable. Therefore, the English and Social Studies departments require that students read the books listed below during the summer months. The books are readily available at public libraries and area bookstores and will be available at the school bookstore.

Students should be prepared to discuss and write about these books in their English and Social Studies classes when school begins in the fall. Up to 20% of the quarter grade will be based upon the student's ability to show familiarity with the texts and to provide a personal response to them. If you have any questions, you may call Mr. Pat Callahan, Chair of the English Department, or Mr. Dean Simmons, Chair of the Social Studies Department (454-4570).
