The Saint Thomas Academy administration is proud to announce that 14.6% of the Class of 2009 earned the designation of Recipient, Finalist or Commended Student in the National Merit Program.

T. FitzPatrick, P. MacGregor and J. Nye were National Merit Scholarship recipients.

J. Butler, B. Earley, and T. Knoedler were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists. All of our semifinalist students qualified to advance to the finals.

M. Farley, T. Garvey, S. Johnson, C. Lane, B. Lee, R. Litwin, T. Mealey, R. Muellerleile, N. Pennell, R. Robinson, A. Rohde and A. Stoeri were named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students.

More than 1.4 million high school juniors in the nation entered the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The nationwide pool of Commended Students, which represents the top five percent of U.S. high school seniors, is made up of the highest scoring entrants in each state.

E. Mitchem '09 was named to the list of Outstanding Participants in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. These students scored in the top 4% of more than 150,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 2007 National Achievement Program when they took the 2007 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Cadet Awards

Every May administrators and faculty present awards to students at an all-school assembly. These awards include All-State Athletic letters, Fine Arts awards, National Language awards, and the Christian Service Award.

Academic Awards

Eagle Award

Students who have an annual cumulative GPA of 3.67 or better receive the Eagle Award. The cumulative GPA for three quarters is used to compute the Eagle Award for Seniors who receive their final award at a dinner reception in June. More seniors may be added after fourth quarter grades are computed. All Senior Eagle Award recipients are recognized at graduation. Other students receive the Eagle Award during Formation the following school year.

Torch Award

Students who have an annual cumulative GPA of 3.33 to 3.66 receive the Torch Award. All Senior Torch Award reipients are recognized at graduation. Other students receive the Torch Award during Formation the following school year.

These awards were presented on September 24 and 25, 2008. The awards were presented for academic performance during the 2007-08 school year; the students are listed under their current grade level (2008-09 year).

High Honor Roll and Honor Roll

At the end of each semester, semester grades are used to compute the Honor Roll.

Students with a GPA of 3.67 or better are on the High Honor Roll and students with a GPA between 3.33 - 3.66 are on the Honor Roll.

Advanced Placement Exams Scholars

Thirty-two Saint Thomas Academy students have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams. Approximately 18% of the 1.6 million students worldwide who took the AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

Students took AP Exams in May 2008, after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

AP Scholars with Distinction received an average grade of at least 3.5 (out of 5) on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Saint Thomas Academy AP Scholars with Distinction are Jason Davis, Cody Evans, Eric Harms, Nicholas Karp, Sean McIntee, Charles Nocker, Benjamin Schneeman, Nathan Schwartzbauer, Charles Torbert, James Walston, Michael Wangen and Matthew Wicker. [All Class of 2008]

AP Scholars with Honor received an average grade of at least 3.25 (out of 5) on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Saint Thomas Academy AP Scholars with Honor are Michael Brombach, Nicholas Giannetti, Daniel Hirschey, Robert Kelly, John Kennefick, Thomas Lenertz, Matthew Milner, John Moran and Alexander Pinkerton. AP Scholars received grades of 3 (out of 5) or higher on three or more AP Exams. Saint Thomas Academy Scholars are Pedro Bartol, Thomas Flake, Christopher Frid, Paul Markert, Mark Mataczynski, Patrick Murphy, Thomas Ryan, Trevor Ryan, Thomas Schreier, Andrew Speer and Andrew Wier.
