More than 1.5 million high school juniors in the nation entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school students, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. Commended Students, which represents the top five percent of U.S. high school seniors, is also made up of the highest scoring entrants in each state.

National Merit Scholarship recipients of 2010 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April 2010 and concluding in July.
