Saint Thomas Academy
The Saint Thomas Academy Supermileage Team wins the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) College Supermileage Challenge. Eaton Proving Grounds, Marshall Michigan With light winds and cool temperatures the Saint Thomas Academy Supermileage Team repeated as North American Champions at the 2000 SAE College Supermileage Challenge. Competing against some of the best engineering universities in the United States and Canada the team composed of Mike Turner, Kevin Smith, Luke Currell, Dan Parker, Ryan Dobie, and Ray Schleck kept the student built car sipping fuel, posting multiple runs over 1100 miles per gallon of gasoline. The Cadet’s car was almost 500 m.p.g ahead of second place Cedarville College. Driver Kevin Smith won his second National Championship with a best run of 1131 m.p.g. The Minnesota team from Moundsview High School/Chippewa Middle School finished third at the college competition Two weeks earlier the STA team surprised even themselves with a record breaking 1322 miles per gallon at the twelfth annual Minnesota Technology Education Association (MTEA) Supermileage Challenge. The 2000 Supermileage car shows many improvements over last years National Champion vehicle including a redesigned vacuum-bagged carbon-fiber/foam core sandwich body. The entire car is fully suspended, driven by a 3.5 hp Briggs and Stratton gasoline engine, weighs less than 100 pounds, and carries one person. For more information please contact
