The Write PlaceThe Write Place is a writing lab operated by Donna Isaac. Students who wish to receive help with any sort of writing can meet with the instructor, preferably by appointment. Drop-ins are welcome, but appointments take precedence. To meet with the director, students must think, plan, and prepare ahead of time so that they can get into the lab. An appointment book sign-up is in the lab. The director prefers that the student bring in a double-space, typed copy of his work. A file for each student that visits the lab is kept; this file is a record of various grammatical/mechanical errors discussed. Each time a student visits, the hope is that previously discussed problems can be corrected by the student himself, thus, showing his progress. The director will help with editing errors, explaining the reason for changes and corrections. Reliance on the STA Writing Handbook and a dictionary is part of the process. Revision work is likely to rest on the student's shoulders, with suggestions made by the director. The Write Place: General Information for the STA Community“Effective writing is more than clear communication. It’s a statement of your professional standards and self-image.” Stephen Wilbers The Write Place is the STA writing lab located in Room 205. It is for ALL departments and for ALL members of the STA community. Here are some things to know: 1. Open lab times: Period 3; Period 5/6 (limited, but available); and Period 8. The lab is open after school Monday-Thursday: 3:15-4:00 and Friday: 2:45-3:15. Students make appointments by signing up in the notebook in the room. Drop-ins are fine if appointments are not already made and if time allows only. Students who need help should plan ahead and should bring a typed, double-spaced copy of their writing; and should be on time for appointments. The purpose of the director is NOT to be a glorified editor. The instructor does point out needed grammar and punctuation but does so instructively, keeping track of a student’s needs and weaknesses by marking a chart that is kept in a file for that individual student. 2. Students may use the lab only with teacher permission and supervision (if director is not present.) 3. The lab can be used at any time for classes if the director is notified in a timely manner. (six computers, tables, and reading corner with six bean bags available). Writing resources available by request and permission. 4. Teachers and staff may use the room at any time for a work room. There is a printer in the lab. 5. Teachers and staff who use the lab are responsible for locking up. 6. Students using the lab from study halls must sign out with study hall teacher. Students may return to study hall with a pass from the director; otherwise, they should remain in the lab. 7. Teachers may require certain students to use the lab for writing assignments before accepting such assignments. Use discretion. The director can stamp and sign any paper you wish her to. 8. The Write Place, in cooperation with the Fine Arts Department, sponsors a coffeehouse during the year. Teachers and staff are encouraged to participate and to promote this to their students. The coffeehouse is an open venue for all members of the STA community to share writing, music, readings, art and performance pieces. |
