2006 Trip to Grand Cayman Island
In June 2006, 20 Juniors and Seniors, four faculty members, and two parents from the Saint Thomas Academy community spent eight days on Grand Cayman Island diving and studying Marine Biology. The entire group completed SCUBA certification with 15 open-water dives in Cayman after participating in two classroom sessions and two pool dives at the Academy pool in the winter and spring. All participants also learned basic Marine Biology in classroom sessions prior to the trip and in informal presentations in Cayman.
The reef and marine life in Cayman are pristine. It is one of the top sites in the world to dive and study Marine Biology and to enjoy the Carribean atmosphere. The trip was both a vacation and the learning experience of a lifetime for the students, parents, and teachers.
A special thanks goes out to Dr. Pearce, Mr. Wynia, and Ms. Glaser for the assistance and insight that added to the experience. Also, thanks to Dr. Hoffmann and Dr. Smith, who aided in the areas of cooking, minor medical advice, and countless other areas. We will travel to the Island again in June 2007. Information will be available sometime this fall.
