Saint Thomas Academy Service Fair for Juniors
April 11, 2008
We strongly encourage upcoming seniors to complete their senior service graduation requirement in the summer between junior and senior year. It is our experience that because of the rigorous academic program, college/university search and application process, strong c0-curriculars and leadership roles seniors enjoy, completing this requirement can reduce stress and add a summer experience that is fun and rewarding.
Service Graduation Requirement:
• Forty hours of direct service
• Ten hours of reflection, journaling, and social analysis (if you are interested journals will
be ready before you leave for summer break)
• Minimally, 30 of the 40 hours are to be completed at one agency
• The core of your service hours (30 hours) should be relationally based so that your service
experience can be incorporated into a well thought through journal and an excellent
presentation in your senior Theology Social Justice class.
• Coaching can only count for ten hours unless you are coaching a team with special needs
(check with Mrs. Doyle for prior approval if you are unsure)
• No “double dipping”
• Completion of your service hours will determine your placement in the Senior Projects,
which happen in the last two weeks of the school year. A policy of “first come, first serve”
will be used in forming teams and selecting agency placements for Senior Projects.
Simple Rules for Summer Service:
• Summer service hours need to be verified by the agency volunteer supervisor
• Documentation of verified hours need to be turned in by Friday, September 5, 2008
• During the first two weeks of school a mini-lottery will be held each day to determine the
order of selection for students turning in hours that day. Get your hours in as soon as you
can. After this date, as students complete their 40 hours and turn in their verification forms
their names will be added to this established list which will be used for the selection of teams
and agency placements.
