2009 LENTEN ACTIVITIES

FoodDrive.jpgFOOD COLLECTION FOR NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE

During the week of March 2nd, students picked up packs of 10 grocery bags.  They were instructed to advocate for the hungry by bringing these bags to neighbors and telling them about needs in our community.  Neighbors are then asked if they would kindly fill the bags with food.  Students picked up the bags by March 5th, and the Neighborhood House picked up the collected food on March 9th from STA. More information about Neighborhood House can be found at www.neighb.org.  Update: Neighborhood house announced that STA had the largest collection by a single group in its history!

SHOE COLLECTION FOR "SOLES FOR SOULS"

During the week of March 2nd to March 6th, students are encouraged to bring in gently used shoes.  We are collecting all types of shoes.  For more information about Soles for Souls, visit www.soles4souls.org  Drop boxes are located at the front doors of the High School and the Middle School.    Update:  More than 120 pair of shoes were collected!

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES 24 HOUR FOOD FAST

From noon on March 16th to noon on March 17th, students have an opportunity to fast in solidarity with the millions of people who go hungry every day.  Students fasting will meet through the day for prayer, support and videos/education on world hunger.  Students are invited to have friends and family "sponsor" their fasting.  Proceeds will go to Catholic Relief Services.  Students 14 and older are invited to participate.  Permission slips are required and can be picked up from Ms. DeWitt in Room 209.   For more information visit www.foodfast.org

Update:  Nearly 40 students, faculty and staff participated in the Food Fast program this year, raising awareness for world hunger.

BOWL MAKING and SOUP DINNER

BOWL MAKING:  Students gathered on Saturday Feb. 28th and will gather again on March 4th to make soup bowls from clay.  Under the instruction of Ms. Jerri Neddermeyer, students have an opportunity to learn some basic pottery making skills.  Over the next couple of weeks, the bowls will be glazed and fired.  Students, parents and families are welcome to join in the bowl making on Wed., March 4th from 2:45 to 5:30 in the STA cafeteria.

 SOUP DINNER: Monday April 6th, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

The bowls will be sold (along with a number of pottery items) at a soup dinner held in the STA cafeteria.  Proceeds from the sales will support Sharing and Caring Hands , a organization that serves the needs of the hungry in the Twin Cities.  The soup will be provided by STA faculty and parents.  You're invited to join us for a simple meal of bread and soup.

Purchase bowls made at STA for $15 (which includes soup, bread and drink) or a soup dinner for $5.   Update: With the help of our parents donating soup, Ms. Jerri Neddermeyer's guidance and contributions to the bowl-making, we raised more than $1500 for Sharing and Caring Hands!
