Service Opportunity in Kampala, Uganda – Parent/Student Information Meeting October 6
Last week, we announced a new service opportunity for a group of students to travel to Uganda and work on a building project at the Daughters of Charity Orphanage on the outskirts of the capitol city of Kampala. The orphanage is home to 80 -100 children ranging in age from two years through their teens. These children are able to attend school (for which the orphanage must pay) only because they bake biscuits every day and sell them at local markets. They earn enough so that a few of the children can go on to secondary school (the equivalent of our high school) and some even go on to receive a college degree. The orphanage could send more children to school if they could increase their revenues by selling more biscuits. Currently, the limiting factor is a reliable, inexpensive source of eggs. Our project will be to build a chicken coop on the grounds of the orphanage large enough to house several hundred chickens.
The trip will take place during the last two weeks of January 2010. Mr. Julius Tangwe from Saint Thomas Academy will chaperone. Our students will work side-by-side with students from the University of St. Thomas who are in Kampala for the month of January. STA and UST students will live together in a retreat center run by the Archdiocese of Kampala, located approximately 1/2 mile from the Daughters of Charity Orphanage.
The cost of this trip is currently estimated to be approximately $3,500. The final price will depend on the cost of airfare when we make the flight reservations. Please consider this opportunity for service for your son. Not only will the experience create memories that will last a lifetime, your son will know first hand that his contribution has forever changed the lives of others.
There will be a meeting at STA on Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Center to discuss this opportunity with you and your son.
UPCOMING EVENTS – September 21 – Senior Parent Night September 24 – Middle School Magazine Drive turn-in day September 25 – Student photo retakes – grades 7-11 September 28 – Eagle Awards (invitations were mailed) September 30 – Mothers’ Club Harvest Mass and Meal

Dear Parents:
Student(s) or staff at STA have influenza-like illness. Symptoms of influenza-like illness include fever, cough sore throat, muscle aches or fatigue, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. If your son has a health condition (such as asthma, diabetes, lung or heart problems) you should contact his health care provider for instructions, especially if he develops influenza symptoms. Local clinics are not testing specifically for H1N1, but are testing for the flu. If the test is positive, it will either be for Influenza A or Influenza B. H1N1 is a type of Influenza A, and currently 97% of the Influenza A in the metro area is thought to be H1N1. Link to tips for influenza prevention.

The students will partner with UST students to build a chicken coop on the grounds of the Daughters of Charity Orphanage.
