Co-Curricular Athletics -
Highlights from the 2009-10 school year
The Cross Country team placed first in the conference for the third consecutive year. The team placed second at the sectional meet and qualified for the state tournament. The Cadets placed 4th at the state tournament (the highest placement in school history). Other team championships: Dakota Invitational, Red Knight Invitational, St. Olaf Showcase. The team also earned the Gold Standard of Academic Excellence Award with a team GPA of 4.02 (criteria: the top five GPAs are selected from the state roster of nine, then averaged to give a team score; the Gold standard is 3.75 to 4.0). Coach Todd Hierlmaier was named the Section Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
The Soccer team placed third in the conference and finished the season with a record of 13-5-3; the team made it to the section semifinals.
The Football team was undefeated for the regular season (8-0). The conference co-champions went on to win the section championship for the second consecutive year and competed in the state tournament, making it to the semifinals.
The Freshman Football team was undefeated for the season.
The 7th Grade Soccer team won the CAA Championship.
The Swim/Dive team set the conference relay meet record on December 10, 2009, for the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:56.22. The previous meet record was set by STA in 2001. The team was the True Team section champions and the Class 1A True Team State Meet champions.
The team was the section champions and finished third in State. S. Nields '12 placed first in the 100 breaststroke.
The Wrestling team won the January 16, 2010, Invitational - placing first out of ten teams - and making STA history as the first squad to win a larger tournament. The team finished the regular season with a record of 5-8. R. Hidalgo '10 represented the Cadets at the state tournament for the third consecutive year. C. McCarty '10 represented the Cadets at the state tournament.
The Alpine Ski team repeated as State Champions, Section Champions and undefeated Conference Champions. The team also won the Wild Mountain Invitational, the Welch Village Invitational, the All-Conference Race and the Frostbite JV Invitational.
Individually in the state tournament, D. Thomas '11 placed first and M. Whalen '11 placed sixth.
The Nordic Ski team placed second in the Classic Suburban conference.
The STA Junior Gold team placed first at the 2010 Youth Schwan Cup tournament.
The Hockey team placed second in the conference and was seeded #1 in the Section 4A tournament, where they were runners-up.
The 7th Grade A Basketball team won the CAA Championship.
The 8th Grade A Basketball team won the St. Paul CAA Championship.

In the Cadets' section semifinal win, Abbott made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone and was able to get one foot down before falling out of bounds. The catch was good enough for six points and helped STA get the win.
