ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SEMESTER GRADES
    Parents, please ignore semester 2 grades in PowerSchool.  Those grades are fluid until teachers finish computing grades the second week of June.
 

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
    The admissions office is seeking housing for two foreign exchange students.  Housing is needed for an incoming seventh and a ninth grade student.  To learn more, contact the admissions office at 651-683-1515, pmansur@cadets.com or jkenney@cadets.com
 

FREE NATIVE PLANTS
    The Middle School Eco Club has native plants free for the taking next week after the last exam each day - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in room 250 (12:00 to 1:00 p.m.).  There is a variety of prairie grasses and wildflowers germinating in decomposable pots ready to be planted.  The native plants would be a nice addition to a perennial garden.  Any questions, contact Garry Loufek at gloufek@cadets.com.

    Parents, please remember that students are expected to take their semester exams at the scheduled time.  Students do not need to be at school if they do not have an exam but we request that students do not ask teachers about taking an exam at a different time.

    This summer, to begin the 2010-11 school year, we will have a new way to distribute materials to, and collect information from, parents and students.  We have made these changes to make it easier and more efficient for parents to acquire all the important information needed to begin a new school year.
    You must come to school with your son(s) on one of these days.  You may show up at any time between the hours listed above (no appointment is needed).
    SCHEDULES WILL NOT BE MAILED FOR THE 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR.
 

SELL YOUR USED UNIFORMS THROUGH THE MOTHERS’ CLUB

    With retirement in mind while looking to the future, Bill “Crash” Collins, STA Class of 1968, will be offering his last-ever Drivers Education Class this spring.  He is looking to the future and winding down on his commitments for classroom and behind-the-wheel training.  He hopes to retire within the next few years and is willing to provide this last class to the STA community.  This class will only be available at his South St. Paul location.  To register and learn more about his program visit his Web site

ERIC HARMS ’08 TREE DEDICATION

ROUNDABOUT CONSTRUCTION ANTICIPATED TO BEGIN ON JUNE 15

     The City of Mendota Heights has confirmed that the construction of the roundabout is scheduled to begin on June 15, 2010. The roundabout will be located at the entrance to Visitation to reduce the potential for serious accidents. Mendota Heights Road will be closed between Dodd Road and Lake Drive during construction, which will significantly decrease the cost of the project and the time needed to complete it.

SENIORS: GRADUATION  INFORMATION FROM THE COMMANDANT
 
  
    On 2 June, in the gym, all seniors will undergo graduation practice with Mr. Byrne.  As part of this process, each senior will be inspected by the military department to ensure compliance with haircut standards.  A regulation haircut is required for graduation practice.  EVERY YEAR WE HAVE A FEW SENIORS WHO ATTEMPT TO CHALLENGE SCHOOL STANDARDS… and it results in an uncomfortable situation that could have been avoided.  Parents, please assist us in ensuring that this standard is met for baccalaureate and graduation.  The uniform for baccalaureate and graduation is Class A1 (white pants, gloves, and hat).  Thank you for your cooperation.

    The Grand March is at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 22.  Only parents of seniors, with a nametag, will be allowed in the court.  Other parents are invited to view the Grand March from the upper level railing.
    All parents and alumni are invited to return at 10:30 p.m. for the Crack Drill Squad performance.

TRACK TEAM SETS RECORDS!    
    The 1600-meter medley relay team of Braddock (200), Freund (200), Leighton (400), and FitzPatrick (800) set a new school record of 3:40.27, breaking the old record by five seconds.  The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Anderson, FitzPatrick, Flanagan and Miller set a school record of 8:02.36.  Anderson set a school record of 9:38.00 in the 3200-meter run.

    From Mrs. Miley: KEE Club would like to thank all parents who joined us this year on our trips to feed My Starving Children.  On our monthly visits, Saint Thomas Academy was a significant part of the packing that fed more 450 children from different parts of developing countries for an entire year. Thanks also to this year’s senior captains, Nitschke, Holtz and Neuberger, for your energy and dedication to this cause for the past few years.  You will be missed!

HOST FAMILIES ARE STILL NEEDED
     The admissions office can provide an opportunity for interested families to meet the 2010-11 foreign exchange students.
We are seeking placement for two students.  Our seventh grade student will join us from Monterrey Mexico.  He is interested in soccer, basketball, skating and bass guitar.
      Our ninth grade student will join us from Korea.  Don says he likes adventure and is interested in soccer, biking and cars.  He currently lives in Minnesota and is willing to meet prospective host families at their convenience.

SENIORS AND GRADUATION  INFORMATION FROM THE COMMANDANT
     On 2 June, in the gym, all seniors will undergo graduation practice with Mr. Byrne.  As part of this process, each senior will be inspected by the military department to ensure compliance with haircut standards.  A regulation haircut is required for graduation practice.  EVERY YEAR WE HAVE A FEW SENIORS WHO ATTEMPT TO CHALLENGE SCHOOL STANDARDS and it results in an uncomfortable situation that could have been avoided.  Parents, please assist us in ensuring that this standard is met for baccalaureate and graduation.  The uniform for baccalaureate and graduation is Class A1 (white pants, gloves, and hat).  Thank you for your cooperation.


SUMMER ATHLETIC CAMPS

      STA offers a variety of summer athletic camps for children of all ages. Enroll your son in basketball, soccer and/or football camp; enroll your son or daughter in swimming camp. Registration forms are available online.
 

LET’S PARTY! OPENINGS ARE STILL AVAILABLE
1) Queen of Excelsior Cruise - For parents of the Class of 2013
      Attention Freshman parents. Here's your chance to get to know your fellow Class of 2013 parents better (before the boys start driving and going to dances). Spend an early summer evening together on Lake Minnetonka aboard the Queen of Excelsior. Includes dinner, with cash bar. Hosted by STA parents Bob and Molly Ziton.

Date: June 23, 2010 – 6:00-9:00 p.m.  Cost: $35 per person

2) Party at the O.K. Corral
     No gunfight here, just the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday grilling up some really fine vittles, beer and wine to wash it all down and some good old-fashioned fun. Put 'yer cowboy boots on and join fellow STA cowpokes for some foot stompin' dancing to a live band. This is one backyard shindig you won't want to miss! Hosted by STA parents.

CADET MAKER NEWS
- Cadet Pillows for the Senior’s rank and medals are available in the Cadet Maker; please allow two weeks for personalization, if requested.
- Graduation supplies are available such as napkins and plastic cups, table top decorations and graduation ornaments and cards.
- SUMMER READING BOOKS will be available the first week of May.
- Don’t forget STA aprons and Building on Traditions cookbooks for Mother’s Day.
- We now have TERVIS TUMBLERS in three sizes
- Look for sale items during the month of May
      Anyone interested in helping in the Cadet Maker during the 2010-11 school year, please send an e-mail to Mary Waldvogel at mwaldvogel@cadets.com.  It is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer at school; she requests that a volunteer work at least two shifts a month either during lunch or after school.
 

LACROSSE TEAM FEE DUE
     A friendly reminder that the $100 fee for lacrosse is due May 11th. Please contact Mr. Byrne for confidential financial assistance, if needed.
