Nunez and Rock Named National Merit Finalists

Saint Thomas Academy announced today that the following seniors moved to the next level and were named Finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program:

These students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit® Scholarships, worth more than $34 million, that will be offered this spring. National Merit Scholarship recipients of 2012 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April 2012 and concluding in July.

More than 1.5 million high school juniors in the nation entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Students Advance in Brain Bee Competition

All 13 AP biology students competed in the Minnesota Brain Bee on January 25. This is an online timed test featuring 90 questions about the human brain.

The following students are in the top 30 in the state and are going on to a regional competition Wednesday, February 8.

Kauth '13 Earns Eagle Scout

Congratulations to H. Kauth '13 for earning the rank of Eagle Scout!

Only five percent of Scouts attain the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America. An Eagle Scout must have completed at least 21 merit badges and organize a service project that benefits his church, community, or school. Kauth is a member of Troop 245.

Hockey Team Hosts Military Appreciation Day

SAINT THOMAS ACADEMY AND DEFENDING THE BLUE LINE HOST MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY ON SATURDAY, FEB. 4

Active Military Personnel, Veterans and Their Immediate Families Get Free Admission to Hockey Game Against South St. Paul

WHAT: The Saint Thomas Academy hockey team and Defending the Blue Line, will host a Military Appreciation Day, which will include a free admission to the Cadet’s game against South St. Paul with a military I.D. Between game periods, the special guests will compete in a shoot out and “Chuck-a-Puck” for the chance to win prizes. All active members of the military and veterans, and their immediate families (defined as the spouse/significant other and their children) are invited to attend.

Defending the Blue Line is a non-profit organization that helps ensure children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps, special events, and financial assistance for registration fees and other costs associated with hockey.

WHEN: Saturday, February 4, 3-5:30 p.m.

Cadets at State Debate Tournament

The state debate tournament was held January 13-14, 2012.

Congratulations to juniors K. Anderson and E. Polsky for qualifying for the tournament!

Polsky finished in 13th place and Anderson finished in 19th place.

Rifle Team Beats CDH

2012-01-26

After the competition at Cretin-Derham Hall on 11 January (where the Cadets won), on 25 January, the STA Rifle Team hosted another match vs. CDH.

When it was all said and done, the Cadet’s Rifle Team, consisting of all first-year shooters (M. Chapman ’15, P. Cramer ’14, J. Benedict ’14, N. Caspers ’15 and S. Supplee ’15), scored the victory, an easy defeat over the Raiders, 1252-1095.

We look forward to our next competition in February.
