Knowledge Bowl Team Heading to State

The top 15 teams in the metro region competed on March 11, with the top six teams advancing to the State Knowledge Bowl Tournament.

STA Students Step Up to Stop Hunger

This is the second year for the Academy's partnership with Neighborhood House and, as part of the nonprofit’s 2010 March food drive campaign, students went door-to-door with Kowalski's grocery bags from Monday, March 1 through Friday, March 5, asking for food donations.

The Cadets collected 11,280 pounds of food!

Last year, Academy students, faculty and staff filled Kowalski’s grocery bags with more than 5,000 pounds of food – twice the amount of the Neighborhood House’s previous record one-time donation.

In addition to providing grocery bags, Kowalski’s donated $1,000 to Neighoborhood House and students collected an additional $1,000 in cash donations.

8th Grade Basketball Team Wins St. Paul CAA Championship

The 8th grade "A" basketball team, coached by Mr. Tom Klein, defeated Highland Catholic in an overtime victory, 48-43 to become St. Paul CAA Champions!

J. Waldvogel '15 Qualifies for State Geographic Bee

Waldvogel was named a semifinalist eligible to compete in the 2010 Minnesota Geographic Bee. Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eight-grade students throughout the state to determine each school's Geographic Bee winner.

School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The Society then invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.

The 2010 Minnesota Geographic Bee will be held at St. Cloud State University on Friday, April 9, 2010.

7th Grade Basketball Team Wins CAA Championship

Saint Thomas Academy 7th Grade Basketball team defeated the #1 seed
Nativity in the St. Paul Tournament today, 43-22 (I think). It was a
close game (8 points) with about eight minutes left but we wore them
down. The story today was holding one of the best players around, S.
Neuman, to 10 points. J. Waldvogel played Neuman tough the whole
game with help from B. Watson. J. Dolan played a lot of minutes at
the point due to W. Nelson's broken collarbone, and he held up very
well and he and C. Levi directed our attack the whole game. Our
big guys, J. Sorenson and R. Jacobsen played very well and
controlled the boards which is what we needed. N. Morreale and
S. Westerback came in to give those guys a rest and did a nice
job. Morreale and N. Reagan had some buckets against their press which
kept us comfortably in front (although I was not comfortable until
there was about two minutes left.)

We finish the season 12-1 and as the St. Paul CAA Champions. We beat
the only team that had defeated us (We lost 33-30 to Nativity at home
in December). We simply got much better the more we played together,
and the effort today was outstanding. I guess I wish we could play
some more, but we are done. It has been a great year working with ten
fine young men who listened well and worked hard.

STA Alpine Ski Team Participate in Polar Plunge

The state championship STA alpine ski team participated in the Polar Plunge at Lake Calhoun, raising $1200 for the Special Olympics. They did it as a team in their down hill GS suits. This was organized by assistant coach Nelson Carlson (STA 2003).

Team members who participated: D. Thomas, B. Schaefer, M. Whalen, M. Deasey, J. Hartnett, C. Knoedler, A. Laird, P. Walker, A. Hove, and C. Shea.

Head coach Tom Carlson didn’t miss a step, donned a GS suit and led the boys into the waters!

Cadets Swimming Team Places Third in State - Nields '12 Wins 100 Breaststroke

Cadets placed third in the state in Class A

They placed third in the 200 medley relay

C. Triggs '10 placed sixth in the 200 free

P. Brunkhorst '12 placed ninth in the 200 IM and S. Johnson '12 placed 11th

L. Johanns '12 placed 13th in the 100 butterfly

C. Triggs '10 placed seventh in the 100 free

M. Berg '13 placed ninth in the 500 free and C. Schlank '10 placed 15th

L. Johanns '12 placed fifth in the 100 back and C. Schlank '10 placed 14th

In the breaststroke, STA had three medal winners -
S. Nields '10 placed first, P. Brunkhorst '12 placed third and E. Hoekstra '10 placed seventh

The 400 free relay team placed seventh

Mendota Heights City Council Meeting Regarding Lake Drive is March 2nd

PROPOSAL TO CLOSE LAKE DRIVE
    The City of Mendota Heights council, at their February 3rd meeting, approved the construction of the roundabout at Mendota Heights Road and Visitation Drive. There will now be a Public Hearing on a proposal to close Lake Drive – the proposal is to only allow access to STA from Mendota Heights Road.

    Thank you to all who have given input into this process, from attending meetings, writing to council members, sharing information on effectiveness of bollards from other communities, and even providing an independent traffic study report.

    We still need to let the mayor and City Council members know our objections.

Please plan on attending the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Funeral Arrangements for John McDonald '73

Saint Thomas Academy Friends and Families:

It is with deep regret that we announce the unexpected passing of John McDonald Jr., STA Class of 1973, on February 28, 2010.

John was a devoted Saint Thomas Academy Alumnus as he generously donated his time to the STA Alumni Board, Community Auction, the Annual Fund and the Fathers' Club. John was the President of the Fathers' Club in 2008-09.

John and Ann (Donovan)’s son, Will, is a member of the STA Class of 2009 and their daughter is a junior at Visitation School.

Arrangements:
The visitation is from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 3 at O'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home, 575 S. Snelling Ave., St. Paul, (651-698-0796).

The Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 4 at Assumption Catholic Church, 51 W 7th St., St. Paul.
