Grades 6-8 mark an important transition in a young boy's character development and spiritual growth. At STA, special emphasis is placed on preparing young boys for high school learning, including building self-esteem and confidence, as well as improving communication, writing, listening and study skills.
From Mr. Jamie Jurkovich, Director of Middle School:
"Saint Thomas Academy is committed to keeping Middle School classes small, allowing for personal instruction and developing a sense of camaraderie among our students. One of the ways to promote friendships and leadership skills is our "House" program. Students are divided into houses with students in charge of each house, along with faculty advisors. Houses provide an advisory for character development programs, homecoming activities, service work, and more."
Your Educational Experience
In recent years, many other schools have had to limit or or drop offerings in the fine arts and other subjects as well as co-curricular opportunities. The Academy has worked hard to ensure that we continue to provide the following pre-high school college preparatory educational experiences, including:
Lab based science curriculum.
Mathematics and World Language opportunities that meet a student's abilities (French, Latin, Spanish--Chinese in high school via Visitation School).
Middle School band and orchestra.
A range of electives including:
• Lego Design & Engineering
• Introduction to Music
• School of Rock Exploration
• Art Start
• Computer Graphics
• Creative Writing
• Independent Reading
• Chess Strategies
• Introduction to Debate
• Quiz Bowl
The Academy offers middle school students a full slate of co-curricular activities--both athletic and student activities. Middle school athletics compete in the Catholic Athletic Association and some students compete in Minnesota State High School league sponsored events. Student activities range from FIRST LEGO League and FIRST TECH Challenge; to Theater, Knowledge Bowl, Chess Club, Math Team and Table Tennis. Visit our Athletic and Activities pages for the the wide range of opportunities our students can choose to participate in.
All grades are required to read selected books over the summer. Please visit the web page to find out which books you need to read.
