2013-14 School Year

Group Accomplishments

The Cross Country team placed second in the conference, only one point behind first place. They then placed sixth in the section.

The Soccer team had a 13-2-2 record for the season. They placed second in the conference and lost in an upset in the first round of playoffs.

The Football team shared the conference championship with South St. Paul and Tartan, and lost in the section final. The final record was 8-3.

The 8th grade Soccer team won the CAA (Catholic Athletic Association) city championship, the CAA MCYO championship and were runners-up for the CAA SSYO title.

VISTA Productions' Gifts of the Magi received the following honors from the Hennepin Theatre Trusts' SpotLight Musical Theatre Program:
• Honorable Mention Overall Production
• Honorable Mention Overall Performance
• Honorable Mention Acting Achievement by a Chorus/Ensemble
• Honorable Mention Vocal Achievement by a Chorus/Ensemble

The Rifle Team won the Minnesota State Junior Olympics competition in the Sporter Team category. Chapman and Caspers individually placed first and second as in the Sporter category, respectively. The team won a national championship at Camp Perry for the third consecutive year.

The Middle School Quiz Bowl team won the annual Catholic Quiz Bowl. Members are S. Goaley '18, A. Johnson '18, S. McQuillan '18 and J. Rowe '18. The team advanced to the National Middle School Quiz Bowl Championship in Atlanta. 

The Swim/Dive team won the team’s third consecutive state Class A championship. In addition, STA is the only team to have won the True Team state title since its inception in 2005. Voted by his peers, coach John Barnes was named the Class A Coach of the Year.

A number of swimming records were set this season:
New team records: 200 Medley Relay (1:36.04) S. Johanns ’15, Z. Litwin ’14, T. Weiss ’16 and M. Conners ’14; 100 Backstroke (51.42) Johanns.

New conference records: 200 Medley Relay (1:39.44) Johanns, Litwin, Weiss and M. Brown ’16; 100 Backstroke (52.77) Johanns.

New STA pool records: 200 Medley Race (1:38.04) Johanns, J. Najarian ’15, Weiss and H. Nielsen ’16; 100 Backstroke (52.55) Johanns.

The Nordic Ski team placed third in the conference and placed 11th in the section.

The varsity Alpine Ski team placed second in the conference meet—the Jack Zahr Memorial Ski Race—and placed seventh in the section. The JV Alpine Ski team won the conference meet.

The Hockey team was the conference co-champion with a regular season record of 18-6-1. The team was seeded #3 in the Section 3AA tournament and lost in the section championship.

The Basketball team was the conference champion with a regular season record of 19-6. The team was seeded #2 in the Section 4AAA tournament and lost in the section semifinals.

J. Tarum '15 represented the Wrestling team at the state tournament for the third straight year.

The Quiz Bowl team placed third in the state. The Knowledge Bowl team placed second in the state.

VISTA Productions' Shrek! The Musical received the following honors from the Hennepin Theatre Trusts' SpotLight Musical Theatre Program:
• Outstanding Overall Production
• Outstanding Overall Performance
• Honorable Mention Performance by a Student Orchestra

The Baseball team finished the season winning 7 of their last 8 games in conference play to tie for second in conference. In sections, they won the first round to get into double elimination before losing to Bloomington Jefferson and then Prior Lake.

The Lacrosse team finished the season with a record of 7-8, with a loss in the section semifinal game.

The Golf team was the section 3A champions and is heading to the state tournament on June 10th.

The Tennis team ended up 12-4 for the season, with a hard fought 4-3 loss to Eagan in the section quarterfinals. They were conference runners-up to Mahtomedi (ranked #7 in state).

Tom Kane '14, Sousa Award
The John Philip Sousa Award is given to that student who displays excellence in loyalty, cooperation, leadership, dependability, and musicianship and participation. The Sousa Award is the pinnacle of achievement in a high school band.

Brock Carlson '14, Louis Armstrong Award
The Louis Armstrong Award is given out by high schools nationwide to recognize "outstanding musical achievement and an incredible dedication to the program." Typically there is only one recipient per school. The Award is a nationwide symbol of excellence in musicianship. 
 
Walker Lee '14, Directors Award
This award is given annually to students who show exemplary leadership, responsibility and musical dedication to the VISTA Band program. Walker was one of three Drum Majors during the school year, and was honored for his outstanding leadership.
