What is Quiz Bowl & Knowledge Bowl?

Quiz Bowl and Knowledge Bowl is a sport for the mind. It provides a format for student growth centered on academics. It generates the kind of attention for bright students that is normally reserved for star athletes. For those who participate, it sends the message "It is cool to be smart." Over the years, many teams have had great success at the state and national level

How does the competition work?

Quiz Bowl and Knowledge Bowl are interdisciplinary academic contests designed for high school students. During a meet, teams of four students compete in written and oral rounds by answering questions related to all areas of learning.

Questions are developed from over 15 curriculum areas, including math; science; national and world affairs; art and music; geography; U.S. and world history and world languages. Questions test students' recall, problem solving and critical thinking skills. Participation takes quick thinking and teamwork and like all team sports, students learn to work together to reach their goal.

Saint Thomas Academy had a great 2018 Knowledge Bowl season! Looking forward to the 2019 Knowledge Bowl season, there will be a few changes to our club. The most significant change will be the addition of a second moderator, who will work with Ms. Geyer to manage the middle school teams. The second change is actually an old change, but one that was not announced officially at the start of our current season: the inclusion of the sixth grade in our competition group. Middle School Knowledge Bowl is no longer open only to 7th-8th grades, but offers competition experience for all students at the middle school level, including sixth graders. It is our hope to have 3 teams competing regularly, one team to represent each grade.

Practices: We will have practices during formation in the 2019 season, from 10:10-10:30 a.m. on B days, beginning in October and ending around our final season meet in mid-February. Students will be excused from formation during this time to participate.

Meets: We will have five scheduled meets during our season. Each meet will take place in the metro area on a Tuesday or Thursday, with the exception of our state meet, which will be held on a Saturday toward the end of January. Meets will typically run from 3:30-7:30PM and students will be dismissed early from school if the meet location is over 25 minutes away. Parents are responsible for taking their sons to and from the meets, or setting up carpooling schedules with other parents to transport each student safely from school to the meet location.

Why should my son participate in Knowledge Bowl?
1.     Teaches problem solving skills
2.     Develops critical thinking abilities
3.     Expands effective communication between students
4.     Promotes positive relationships
5.     Increases understanding of time management
6.     Practices do not interfere with sport activities
