Becoming Financially Literate

College Ready: Make Your Summer Count!

Description:
For rising seniors and juniors, this nine-hour course will cover the following topics: Naviance Family Connection; College Search and Search Tools; Deadlines and Due Dates; College Visits; Interviews; Testing; Recommendations; Essays and Essay Writing; Résumé Writing; Common Application – process and procedures; Scholarships and Financial Aid. The course will be comprised of lectures, group discussion and small group work.  Assignments will be given. Students will be expected to be on time and attend all classes.

Ceramic Art Studio
Age Group:

Description:
This class is a great opportunity for students to learn about, or enrich their knowledge of, ceramics.  Students will learn about different wheel throwing, handbuilding, and glazing techniques.  They will have the chance to build pieces on the wheel and work with a variety of handbuilding techniques such as slab building, carving, sculpturing, and coil building.  One week after the class is finished, students will come back to STA to pick up their masterpieces.

Competitive Speech for the Beginner
Age Group:

Description:
This unique, interactive class eases students out of their comfort zone exposing them to a variety of speech genres.  Through exciting and enjoyable exercises and practices, students discover their unique strengths and develop confidence to convey their ideas effectively. The camp will culminate with a mini competition where students apply what they have learned in a fun and supportive environment.

Introduction to UAVs (Drones)

Description:
How do I decide which drone is for me?  What are their capabilities/costs?  How do they work?  Students will become familiar with various types of drones, including hands-on instruction, flight times, safety, first-person view, operational procedures, and legal considerations.  No equipment is needed to participate; comfortable clothing is recommended (classes will be held outdoors at times).

Introduction to Filmmaking

Description:
Do you love making movies or want to learn how?  This class will be a hands-on experience in developing a creative idea and turning it into a film.  Each session will produce an original work.  Filmmaking equipment is provided by the instructor.

Learn to be a Film Critic!

Description:
Do you love to watch films and talk about them?  This class will expose you to a variety of film genres and provide an instructor-led forum to discuss the components of a successful film: story, casting, cinematography, edits, costumes, and sound to name just a few!  Each day we will watch a film classic and then discuss why the film was successful.  Film titles will be age appropriate and sent to participant families prior to viewing.

LEGO Robotics
Age Group:
Boys & girls entering grades 4-8
Dates: June 26-30 (Beginner) and July 17-21 (Advanced)
Time: Both sessions–9:00 a.m.-noon
Description: In this engaging, hands-on class, students will exercise their creativity by building and programming an autonomous LEGO Mindstorms™ robot.  They will work in teams of two (friends are encouraged to sign up together to create teams) to design and program their robot to complete challenges from FIRST LEGO League competitions.  The last day of each session will feature a mini competition – family and friends are welcome and prizes awarded.  Additional opportunities for team building, coding, and developing presentation skills will be explored.  Students will not keep their robots after the class.

Beginner class will introduce students to a wide range of concepts used in real world mechanical engineering and computer programming environments. No previous experience is required.

Advanced class is for students who participated in last summer’s LEGO Robotics class or have previous experience with the program.

Stop Motion Animation

Description:
Students will learn how stop motion animation works by creating their very own animation video using iPads.  They will storyboard and create their own animation using personal drawings, props, and backgrounds.  Students will also learn the history of the medium, including how stop motion was first used.  Students may bring their own iPad or school will provide one.

Cadet Basketball Camp
Age Group: Boys entering grades 4-8
Dates: Grades 4-6, June 19-22; Grades 7-8, July 10-13
Times: 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. both sessions 
Description: This four-day camp offers the opportunity to embrace their strengths while improving weaknesses.  Campers will have the opportunity to learn how to compete as we incorporate drills that will improve ball handling, passing, shooting, defense, and decision-making.  The camp emphasizes both offense and defense to produce a complete basketball player.

Cadet Youth Football Camp

Description: This three-day camp offers football fundamentals, game knowledge, and individual skill development.  Instructors will help you further develop your current skills and introduce you to concepts and techniques that will help you advance as a football player.  As a beginner or a seasoned veteran, this camp will provide an opportunity for you to learn, all the time, while having some fun doing it!

Introduction to Gun Safety & Marksmanship

Description:
This introduction to gun safety is not a Minnesota DNR Certification Course, however, we will introduce the basics of gun safety and qualification using Saint Thomas Academy’s precision .177 caliber air rifles.  Students will learn gun safety, operation, familiarization, and Marksmanship Qualifications procedures.  All students will implement “hands on” operations in an attempt to earn their qualification badge.  No equipment is needed to participate; note-taking material is optional; comfortable clothing (shorts, jeans, t-shirt, gym shoes) is recommended.
Fee:
$125, Maximum of 20 participants

Cadet Lacrosse Camp

Description:
For those interested in learning the game of lacrosse.  We will work on the concepts of the game in small, understandable pieces and participate in fun and engaging skill-building activities.  The skills students learn will be practice by participating in scrimmages.  Students must have their own equipment.

Cadet Soccer Camp
Age Group: Boys entering grades 4-12

Description: This four-day camp works with players on the fundamentals, skills, and tactics of the game.
Fees: $120 for grades 4-8, and $150 for grades 9-12

Cadet/Blazer Swim Camp
Age Group: Boys & girls age 12 and older
Swimmers must be able to swim 100 yard IM
Dates: Four-Week Training Camp (Monday-Friday, weeks of June 19, 26, July 10, 17)
Times: 9:00-10:30 a.m.
Description: This camp is for swimmers who do not swim on a club but want to maintain conditioning over the summer.  Swimmers will focus on age-specific techniques and endurance while performing all four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly).
Fee: $300 for the four-week camp or $125 for one week

Description:
Nationally certified by the American Swimming Coaches Association, STA varsity head coach John Barnes offers a ten-level program in an organized and fun atmosphere.  When your swimmer completes Cadet/Blazer Swim School, they will be on their way to a lifetime of strong swimming skills!
Fee: $70 for eight group lessons, $90 for eight semi-private lessons, $200 for eight private lessons

Description:
Participants will be taught the fundamental techniques of tennis, including: ground strokes, volley, serve and return, lob and overhead, and the serve.  Instruction will be done via individual direction, drills, and fun games (with prizes!).  Friday is reserved as a “rain day” make-up.  Campers should bring their own racquet.  The camps are held at the Visitation tennis courts.

Quickstart Tennis for the Beginner

Description:
We use oversize tennis balls and indoor court to teach the game to young beginners.  Quickstart involves improving reflexes, hand/eye coordination, and basic stroke form as well as introducing basics such as footwork and scoring.  Tennis will be taught in a fun way involving lots of games and positive coaching.  The instructor will have a few racquets but participants are encouraged bring their own.  The camp is held in the Holtz Gym at STA.

Description: St. Olaf College Coach Sean Ahrar joins STA Coach McCarthy for this four-day camp offering wrestling fundamentals, technique, conditioning, and live wrestling.  As a beginner or a seasoned veteran, this camp will provide an opportunity for you to learn more about being successful on the mat.
