Saint Thomas Academy Middle School announced today that four eighth-grade students received honorable mention recognition in the final round of the National History Day in Minnesota competition recently. They are: Liam Kirchner of Eagan and Leo Ritzenthaler of West Saint Paul in the “individual documentaries” category and Luke Mechtel of Minneapolis and Quang Nguyen of Eagan in the “group exhibit” category.

National History Day is an inter-disciplinary research project for students in grades 6-12. History Day teaches students to:

  • Conduct in-depth research
  • Use primary and secondary sources
  • Read a variety of texts
  • Analyze and synthesize information
  • Write and present historical content

Students choose a topic that relates to an annual theme, research that topic, and present their research in one of five presentation categories: research paper, exhibit, documentary, performance or website.

Students participating in the state contest advanced from one of 12 regional/district contests and an off-site research paper competition in Minnesota. The top two entries in each category at the state competition are eligible to advance to the NHD National Contest.

National History Day in Minnesota is a partnership of the Minnesota Historical Society and the University of Minnesota.
