Saint Thomas Academy Names Loyola’s Buethe Assistant Headmaster

Saint Thomas Academy announced today that John Buethe ’05 has been named Assistant Headmaster, effective Aug. 1, 2022. In this position, Buethe will be responsible for all aspects of academic administration, working collaboratively with other senior administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure Saint Thomas Academy delivers on its mission of developing boys into men of character.

“John is an effective, mission-driven, innovative, and goal-oriented school leader who is passionate about student excellence and achievement,” said Kelby Woodard, Headmaster. “And, he also happens to be an accomplished alumnus who understands our mission, values, and culture well. He is uniquely qualified to strengthen our college-prep standards and curriculum.”

Buethe is a founding member of Arrupe College, Loyola University Chicago’s associate degree-granting institution, and has served as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs since its inception in 2014. In his position, Buethe leads the college’s student retention and transfer initiatives, enacts and communicates academic policy, manages course scheduling, oversees the student-worker program, and more. Prior to Arrupe, Buethe was a teacher for intermediate grades for five years, serving a Catholic school, a charter school, and a public school in the Chicagoland area.

“As an alum, I am forever indebted to Saint Thomas Academy for the formative role it has played in my life,” Buethe said. “It is an intellectually dynamic place. I am humbled by the ingenuity, creativity, and talent of the faculty, administration, and staff. It is not my job to stymie this energy; rather, to organize it such that we move forward together in a positive direction."

Buethe is a doctoral candidate at the School of Education of Loyola University Chicago, where he earned master’s degrees in both public policy and elementary education. He has a bachelor’s degree in English from St. John’s University.
