Saint Thomas Academy Names Mechtel Middle School Director

Saint Thomas Academy announced today that Michelle Mechtel has been named director of Saint Thomas Academy Middle School, effective July 1, 2022. Mechtel, who has served as director of academic life for Saint Thomas Academy for the past 6 years, will replace Jamie Jurkovich, who recently announced his desire to return to the classroom after 11 years as middle school director.

“Michelle is an adept leader with extensive administrative experience from preK to high school,” said Saint Thomas Academy Headmaster Kelby Woodard. “I am confident she will build upon the excellent academic and character formation standards for which Saint Thomas Academy Middle School is known.”

Prior to joining Saint Thomas Academy, Mechtel was the lower school director at Visitation School for 9 years, where she led the lower school through multiple ISACS accreditations, strategic plans and was an integral part of the master site planning committee. She has worked with faculty and families alike, cultivating a strong sense of community while building a strong academic program.

Prior to her educational leadership roles, Mechtel was a classroom teacher in both elementary and intermediate classrooms. Mechtel obtained her K-12 educational administration license and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Catherine University. Mechtel’s son, Luke, recently graduated from Saint Thomas Academy Middle School and will be joining the upper school's freshmen class in the fall. Her daughter, Kate, is a fifth grader at Visitation.
